a local hospital. and when the officer tried to help, the prisoner went for that officer's service weapon. >> the prisoner attempted to take her weapon, there was a struggle over the gun, and at some point the weapon discharged firing a shot into the wall. >> reporter: the holster is designed to make it very difficult for anyone else to take out the holster. fbi statistics shows that

guarding a prisoner is anything but routine work for an officer. last year there was 15,000 assaults on officers. 7,000 happened when officers were transporting prisoners. it is unknown if officers considered the prisoner dangerous. the focus now is finding out how exactly that happened. >> the investigators are still interviewing people and looking at the evidence in determining exactly how the gun discharged and why the gun discharged. the good news from out here today was that nobody was injured, and police tonight have not released the name of that prisoner or the baltimore county police officer. we're live in baltimore county. christian shaffer. he could have called a cab but instead he hailed an ambulance. the good thing is he didn't know how to turn on the siren

and lights. he headed down 50 toward the bay bridge. several calls came into police about an ambulance driving crazy. and about an hour later, troopers were able to track it down. >> and in that area, is where troopers first spotted the ambulance heading westbound on rout 50 heading toward the outlets in queen anne county. >> the driver was finally caught when the ambulance headed into the busy parking lot on rout 404. hit a parked car, ran up on the road. new tonight a child threatened on a bus with a b.b. gun. baltimore city police say the boys were headed to their elementary school. one of the students pulled out the b.b. gun and threatened another student. the situation was reported to city leaders and city schools police. officials say the district will take the appropriate disciplinary action.

a major announcement from baltimore city police tonight. in a rare nighttime news conference, anthony bats announced the department had made its 1,000 gun arrest this year. officers were responding to a home. officers arrested a man and they say they found a semi automatic handgun. >> she said she had seen the officers out here previous nights. he knew there were 12. it was a good way to seek out the officers and they came right away. >> major blake was on hand for the announcement. the superintendent is proving he is open for suggestions when it comes to improving city schools. so dr. dallas mann was eligible to answer questions. >> what i try to do is change the conversation to be proactive. when you're proactive you have environments where kids feel they're connected to the

school. that's why you always hear me talk about do our kids really feel that someone at the school knows then, understands them but they can go to that person if they are sensing or having a problem with anything. and so, we have some schools that do it extremely well. we have some schools that are starting to build those systems now. >> all right, dr. dance is engaging students through social media. they were able to submit questions through twitter and facebook. a few clouds tonight but mainly what we're noticing is the drop in air temperatures. dry conditions but windy still. winds from the northwest. a still tonight the wind cells reflecting that. feeling like the upper 20s now west of baltimore. to the south and east numbers in the mid-20s. in the 20s by daybreak tomorrow. a freeze on the map. there will be a little bit of a bounce tomorrow midday but never out of the 40s. things will change yet again by

sunday and next week coming up. the fire broke out at a towing company. a worker there received minor burns from the fire but refused to receive medical help. nicole fitzgerald faces charges of child abuse and reckless endangerment. her son was found dead. she was treated for cuts in her neck. the trial for former penn state administrators accused of covering up the child abuse scandal by jerry sandusky is being delayed. the jury says they need more

time to think about the cases of three. the three say they did not lie. she spent her life trying to save ours. but last night one of our brightest and smartest lost her life in a car crash in carroll county. she was working to save lives as a specialist in nuclear medicine at the chancer center in westminster. colleagues say she was committed to her work and her role as a wife and a mother to a 2-year-old. >> she was a young come, professional, really just starting out in her career. in her career as helping to save lives or at least to make sick people feel better. as a medical physicist she's a big part of the radiation

radiation therapy, really the backbone. a man had to be rescued from a ravine after his car went over an enbankment and ended up upside down in the water below. happened today in abinton. crews were called out right after the crash was reported. and made their way down 40 feet to get the man out of the car. he was taken by helicopter waiting near by to shock trauma where tonight he's in serious condition. if you got a speeding ticket in baltimore but swear you were driving safely, that ticket may be wrong. tickets baltimore city council member jack young says they'll have to figure out exactly what went wrong. >> we're going to make sure that we're having a hearing that we're going to get to the bottom of it. and hopefully those deficiencies that are in place will be corrected. right now you know, the camera is having some kind of glitch

that we're told but what kind of glitch i really don't know. >> young says anyone hit with improper tickets will be reimbursed and the people should have been notified. a big honor tonight for one of our baltimore ravens, gq magazine has named brandon amadesio an honorary gay of the year. they say he has done a lot to help gays. you may remember he donated tickets to a couple. he received much criticism. as far as terrell suggs, he will be a game time decision. the battle of the beltways has some tensions here in the

we have a bitter custody battle playing out over a girl who was adopted and her bilogical father who never knew she existed. >> in this case everybody is trying to do what's the best thing for the baby. >> reporter: on one side the girl's bilogical father, on the other her adoptive parents. terry h.hann is a staff sergeant. two years ago while he was stationed in south carolina his now ex-wife was giving birth in utah. h.hann says he had no clue. he never knew he was going to be a father or that his baby was put up for adoption. >> he has a right to be with his daughter and that has been taken away. >> reporter: they could never reach him for his consent. >> he knew i was pregnant.

he left while i was showing. i was seven months pregnant. and i left him. >> reporter: jared and christie fry is being asked to give the baby back to h.hann within 10 days. but they're not guilty giving in -- but they're not giving in. they believe that the court made an error and they will lift that up with the supreme court. >> it is possible that everybody in this case was doing what was in the best interest of the girl. >> the little girl caught in the middle of all of this is turning 2 years old in march. it's not clear if she will be spending that birthday with the family she has known or the father that wants to be with

his daughter. cory curtis is being asked to stop having children. court records show that curtis joes roughly $85,000 including interest. curtis says he's been making payments over the last two years and says he has a good relationship with his children. your daily doze of aspirin may not be as effective as you think. a new study shows that taking pills that are coated could reduce the drugs effectiveness or even take away its effectiveness all together when it comes to reducing heart attacks and strokes. a study from the university of pennsylvania was trying to find out why some people were resistant to aspirin when they realized the coating of the pill could really be the problem. bayer which makes aspirin says

much of the morning in the 30s after a start in the 20s. that is going to be cold. and even colder toward harford county where temperatures are going to be low here to bell air. a few passing clouds. we were crystal clear earlier. we're going to clear things out through tomorrow. a lot of sunshine, a few thin high clouds. temperatures will not warm up much through friday. another day mostly in the 40s. but there will be a change on the map by saturday. first it's all about the cold air tonight and tomorrow. a struggle to warm up. wear the sunglasses tomorrow. it takes a lot to warm up. friday not much warmer but look at this warm air building again across the south eastern states. it'll make a move north and as we go into saturday, sunday and monday. looks like we're going to be back around 60 for the weekend despite the fact there's some snow on the map.

thanks to the power house cold front. mostly clearer across maryland. clear, cold, breezy. mid-40s we'll say 45 for bwi. mainly where we begin to see a difference, warm air pushing in saturday into sunday and that's going to increase temperatures probably by three or 5 degrees beyond sunday and monday. temperatures increasing up into the low 60s. we'll bring the chance for showers and sunday and monday as well. so i know we've been talking about this battle of the beltways and everything else this weekend. just realize there could be a few showers around but the trade off is there's going to be the mild air also. a little bit of everything on that map. riding that temperature roller coaster. >> it is december. >> as you're out and about doing your holiday shopping you really should consider donating to the abc2 toy drive. donations of new unwrapped toys will go to children in need. drop them off in your area wal-

diet. everything tastes sweeter when you're on a diet. everything tastes better because you're not supposed to be having it. i want to remind everybody to send us your holiday lights shots. your best shots. i've seen some really good decorations. our station facebook page, e- mail us we want to show those off. we loved slice the cat. that was a cool one. take a look -- the cat was up in the tree. seemed like he could fall or something or wrap his leg. temperatures are in the upper 30s now. mid-30s west. they're falling, falling below freezing they'll be in the upper 20s by daybreak. and a struggle to get out of the mid-40s tomorrow. sunshine will make you feel a little bit milder. the outlet does warm us up into the weekend so a little bit of everything here in the seven day forecast.

you have to love that cup of coffee in the morning. we just told you about more starbucks locations nationwide, they're now offering a new metal gift card. it's $450. you only get $400 on the card, the other 50 goes for the card. the special christmas tree. tree farm in ohio charging $2,500 for one of its trues it's 18 feet tall. a fraizer fir it was hand selected from the woods in north carolina then shipped to ohio. some trees are as cheap as $40.
